Headwaters Research Experience
Designed for students to gain the experience of professional caliber scientific research. They select a topic of interest, design a research project, collect data in the field, analyze data, and even author a research paper which they submit for publication. Students are mentored one-on-one by a professional scientist from a field similar to the project topic.

Girls Summer Research Experience
This year, this immersive camp in the Tahoe Area will run as a digital section of the Research Experience above. A female-specific cohort will work together and have special activities outside the regular research program as well. Participants are also invited to an optional week of socially distanced camping at Webber Lake during which they can do data collection.

Physics In and Through Cosmology Workshop 2021
2006 Nobel Prize Winner George Smoot and 2011 Nobel Prize Winner Saul Perlmutter are seeking students for the fifteenth annual summer workshop for high school students and teachers presented by the Physics Division of the Lawrence Berkeley Lab and QuarkNet.
The Physics in and Through Cosmology Workshop will be held remotely in conjunction with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory adjacent to the University of California Berkeley Campus beginning the week of Monday, June 28 and ending the week of Friday, July 23
The workshop is designed to create a vibrant learning community that embraces diversity, equity and inclusion for highly motivated high school students with an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The format this year will all be done remotely, allowing students to attend lectures and work in small groups under the guidance of master teachers and researchers at the lab. The ideal student applicant will have completed Algebra, Geometry, Advanced Algebra, (or the equivalent) and Chemistry or upper division Physics. Underrepresented students in STEM (which include: African Americans, American Indians/Alaska Natives, Latinos, LGBTQ+, students from low income households, and first-generation college attendees) are strongly encouraged to apply.
Every student will increase their knowledge of particle physics, the history, structure, and fate of the universe, and learn about dark matter and dark energy. Top scientific investigators will examine how they use the basic principles of physics to discover the wonders of our universe. Prior knowledge of particle physics and cosmology is not necessary.
What to expect:
- Virtually tour international research facilities at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
- Meet and hear detailed talks by young scientists working on the frontiers of international physics research.
- Learn physics principles through creating videos about current research in Physics
- Build relationships with talented high school student colleagues from around the SF Bay Area.
- Receive recognition for your accomplishments that can be used in college applications.
- Become immersed in the world of science and technology few high school students experience.
