For our April Teacher Spotlight, we interviewed Shealyn Mathews.

What grade(s) are you currently teaching?

9,10,11,12

What do you enjoy most about teaching science?

The fun projects we get to complete and seeing student’s personal growth throughout the year!

What do you enjoy the least?

Grading- I hate everything about it.  

What’s your favorite element?

Oxygen- I love to breathe

What do you love most about working at San Marin?

The community; dedicated teachers, engaging students, and great support staff.

Do you remember your first class? What was it like?

I do! I remember being very nervous to teach my first class and planning every second but being amazed how quickly it went by and how much fun it was to work with the students.

What’s your most memorable teaching moment?

Right after we did frog dissections a student caught a frog on campus and brought it to class to let it hop around the desk and asked if he could dissect it!

What was your favorite subject in High School?

Science and Math

What was your least favorite subject in High School?

Spanish, learning languages are not my strength.

What’s your favorite thing to do outside of San Marin?

Travel or be outside hiking, running, swimming or boating.

What’s something that people might not know about you?

I ran the Boston Marathon when two bombs went off at the Finish Line, I taught in Vietnam, I was able to paraglide in Interlaken, Switzerland.
